Engineered Wood Fiber Playground Surfacing

EWF, Wood Chips, or Mulch

This product is manufactured from engineered, non-toxic, crushed wood fiber (comprised of softwoods or hardwoods), consisting of randomly sized wood fibers, with the average size 1.5"-3" in length, and contains 10%-20% of fine pieces to aid in compaction.

Once the newly installed product has settled, it forms a "knitted" or compacted layer. This layer is compliant to both ASTM F1292-99 (impact attenuation) and ASTM F1951 (ADA accessibility). It does not utilize any wood containing paint, chemicals or additives. The product has minimal bark and is free of twigs, leaf debris and other organic materials. Drainage is important, and the product may freeze if wet in cold weather conditions.

Wood fiber is the most common and one of the most economical surface choices initially, but will require more maintenance and occasionally topping off to maintain the recommended depth, and remain compliant with standards and warranty. Wood fiber can be installed by volunteer labor, as well as by a GameTime Certified Installer.  It leaves your play structure with a beautiful and natural look.

Consumer Alert: When making a decision on where to purchase your EWF (Engineered Wood Fiber) surfacing ask the supplier to provide you with an IPEMA ASTM 2075 Certficate of Compliance.  This is the only way to be assured that the wood material you are looking to purchase is acceptable for use on a playground.
